Medical camp held on March 2

The Indian Journalists’ Association (IJA) conducted a health checkup camp at the Press Club on March 2. The well attended camp was organised by Medica Superspeciality Hospital.
Dr.Abhimanyu Singh, Dr. Anil  Jhajharia, Sister Christina, Mr. Arijeet Sarkar, Mr. Sheikh Mohammed Manawar, Mr. Subhotosh Sil and Dr Hammadur Rahaman conducted the medical camp.
The camp was made possible by the initiative of Ms. Sandhya Sutodia, Chief Media Relations, and Ms. Soma Chakraborty, AVP - Operation.
The hospitals had arranged for a lecture on diabetes which was very much useful to our members
We thank the hospital management and the medical and para-medical staff for their whole-hearted support. We look forward to their continued support in future as well.
Mr. Manish Gupta, former minister, Govt. of West Bengal, graced the occasion despite his very busy schedule.
Thanks is also due to seniors of the IJA and members of the Executive Committee, General Secretary Sekhar Sengupta, Secretary, Debasish Das for their overwhelming support. Thanks is also due to President, Mr. S. Sabanayakan, for planning, initiating and executing the camp and getting a handsome sponsorship.

Prajapati, Prabhakaran elected President & Secretary General unopposed

Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh), December 28, 2018: Mr. Babubhai R. Prajapati of Gujarat Journalists Union was declared elected as the President of the Indian Journalists Union. Since there was no other candidate for the post, he was elected unopposed.

Mr. G. Prabhakaran of Kerala Journalists Union was re-elected as the Secretary General. He too was elected unopposed.

Mr. Habib Khan, Central Returning officer (CRO), Indian Journalists Union Election – 2018 declared the election result on December 26, 2018 at Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh) after the time of withdrawal was over.

Other office-bearers will be elected by the National Council Members at the next plenary/ delegate session early next year. The elections of the National Council Members are in progress in all the IJU-affiliated State Unions.

Doyen of Indian journalism Kuldip Nayar passes away

KULDIPNAYAR
The Indian Journalists Association (IJA) deeply mourned the sad passing away of Kuldip Nayar, 95,  one of the doyens of Indian Journalism, in New Delhi on August 23.
He was a committed journalist who worked till his last breath as his last column appeared in the  Lokmat Times on August 23 morning.
He was a prolific writer, columnist and author of many books, well-known in India and abroad.  He had written columns in over 80 newspapers including Dawn and The Express Tribune published from Pakistan.
Nayar also fought for the freedom of the press for which he was imprisoned during the Emergency.
He was frank and fearless in his views which he pursued till his last.
He served as the Editor of several newspapers including The Indian Express and The Statesman.
He was a well-known human rights activist and served  as a member of Rajaya Sabha and India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
With a heavy heart, IJA sents its deep condolences to the family of Kuldip Nayar.

IJA deeply mourns the untimely demise of its executive member and senior journalist Kazi Fazle Elahi

IJA deeply mourns the untimely demise of its executive member and senior journalist Kazi Fazle Elahi. He breathed his last on Sunday afternoon at a private nursing home in Konnagar, Hoogly. He suffered a massive cardiac arrest couple of days ago and was diagnosed with 80 percent block. He passed away without responding to the treatment. He was just past 70 years.  
He worked for Calcutta Observer newspaper, CTVN, CN TV channels and mainly covered the Writers/ Nabanna beat.
Kazi will be remembered for his friendly and amiable nature.
IJA extends deep condolences to his wife and other members of his family in this hour of grief.

Sabanayakan is President, Sengupta General Secretary

S. Sabanayakan and Sekhar Sengupta were elected as the President and General Secretary respectively of the 96-year-old Indian Journalists’ Association (IJA) at the annual general meeting held at Press Club, Kolkata, on Sunday, March 25, 2018

Mr. Sabanayakan, who headed the organisation for three years from 2013 to 2015, is back at the helm after he was elected unopposed.
Supriyo Bandyopadhyay is the new treasurer.
Sudipta Sengupta and Tarak Nath Roy were retained as vice-presidents. Debasish Das remains the secretary.
Kamlesh Pandey and Abdul Odud are the two assistant secretaries.

Former president of IJA, Dilip Ghosh Chowdhury, passed away

Former president of Indian Journalists’ Association (IJA),  Dilip Ghosh Chowdhury, passed away on Tuesday, 12 March after a prolonged illness. He was 78 and survived by his wife and daughter.
He worked in New Age, Kalantar, Sambad Pratidin and Pravat Khabar.
Ghosh Chowdhury, among many assignments, covered the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation war extensively.
IJA deeply condoled the demise of Ghosh Chowdhury whose contribution was immense.

IJA health camp concludes

A health camp, organised by IJA, for the benefit of its members and fellow journalists, at Press Club, Kolkata, on Sunday drew good response.
AMRI Hospitals came forward to organise the camp where journalists were put through general checkup, eye checkup and ECG.
Among the distinguished guests were Rajya Sabha M.P. Manish Gupta, West Bengal State Cooperative Housing Federation chairman, Asish Chakraborty, social worker Nishit Chakraborty and veteran trade union leader Ashok Ghosh.
In his speech, Mr. Gupta praised IJA’s effort to organise the health camp and promised to extend help in future.
Interim general secretary, Debasish Das, welcomed the guests and president, Sekhar Sengupta, proposed a vote of thanks.
